On 20 October last, the three Alpine motorway companies (AREA, ATMPB and SFTRF) signed a partnership agreement in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Transport. The aim of the agreement is to develop and implement concrete solutions to decarbonise freight between France and Italy and on the motorway routes in the Northern Alps.
To achieve this, the signatories intend to work hand in hand with industrials, economic and political players in France and Italy.
Four lines of action
Firstly, we need to work to promote green engines: liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen and electricity.
Next, we need to take action on the various infrastructures: charging points, logistics platforms, electric roads, while aiming for targeted improvements in access for the most environmentally-friendly vehicles.
In addition, this cannot be achieved without promotional initiatives aimed at hauliers and shippers to help them make the green transition.
The backdrop is close collaboration between the various partners to promote environmentally-friendly road transport, so that we can look forward to a sustainable future.
A clear commitment from APRR & AREA
On 15 September 2023, AREA had already signed an agreement in Savoie with SFTRF, the Syndicat du Pays de Maurienne and HYmpulsion to develop the hydrogen mobility market, in particular by helping transport companies to convert their vehicle fleets to run on green hydrogen.
For Ghislaine Baillemont, Deputy Managing Director of APRR-AREA, these initiatives demonstrate and confirm the two companies' commitment to decarbonising heavy goods vehicle transport and, more generally, to renewing vehicles in favour of less carbon-intensive energies.
