Secondary school in Carcès handed over on 31 July 2017 after only 15 months of works

The school - certified as a "Mediterranean sustainable building" - makes extensive use of natural and exposed structural materials, and is equipped with photovoltaic panels, a wood-fired boiler and a geocooling system.

The public-private partnership awarded to Eiffage by the Var department covered three separate projects for next-generation secondary schools: the Herminier school in La Seyne-sur-Mer and the Esterel school in Saint-Raphaël are currently under construction ; the totally new school in Carcès in rural Var is now complete.

This new establishment, created to serve a growing local population, was handed over by Eiffage on 31 July 2017, after only 15 months of works, an achievement made possible by the combined efforts of all Eiffage Group divisions. The other two schools are scheduled for handover in six months, in February 2018.

Designed by the architect Guy Mascherpa, this structure, designed to accommodate up to 700 students, features a 123-seat auditorium with a 63 sq. m stage, kitchen and canteen facilities serving 300 diners per sitting, a large 1,290 sq. m sports hall and outdoor sports facilities. To maximise their use, the sports hall, athletics track and auditorium have separate entrances, enabling access by local clubs and community organisations outside school opening hours.

Mediterranean sustainable building (Gold)
The completed school has received a Gold rating under the "Bâtiment durable méditerranéen" sustainable construction certification programme. The architectural style makes prominent use of wood, terracotta and exposed structural materials (notably steel and glass). A wide range of bioclimatic solutions have been implemented, including a geocooling system, photovoltaic panels, a wood-fired boiler, brise-soleils, green roofs and systems to recover and reuse water. In particular, a very large, 2,600 cu. m stormwater pond was built for this project.
