This CMR-classified chemical solvent is dangerous for both human health and the environment. Up until now, it has been used to separate bitumen and mineral from the materials derived from demolished road surfaces, during analysis prior to aggregate recycling in the new asphalt pavement formulas.
Eiffage Infrastructures, CEREMA Méditerranée and the IFSTTAR with the participation of CARSAT Centre Est have decided to use different technology to carry out this analysis, and have developed Analysis Safe. Analysis Safe completely replaces PCE with a combination of two methods based on physical principles, notably infrared spectroscopy. Eiffage Route Centre Est's laboratories took part in developing Analysis Safe, and have confirmed the new method's performance. Analysis Safe, which offers many health and environmental advantages by removing the risk of exposure to, and contamination by, PCE, is also very efficient in terms of speed. The analysis only takes 10 minutes, compared to 2 hours for the previous formula.
Analysis Safe echoes the official partnership between Eiffage Infrastructures and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) as part of the «Healthy Workplaces Manage Dangerous Substances» campaign.
