Since 1990, the “Hydraulique Sans Frontières” association has been undertaking projects that provide access to clean water in rural areas of Africa. It recently carried out a water supply project in Diam Diam, a village in the Kaffrine region of central Senegal, which was inaugurated on 1 February 2017.
In addition to the direct benefits of access to clean water in terms of health and safety, the scheme is also enabling the development of income-generating farming activities, helping to empower women in the community and developing skills among the local population (schooling, water management committee and drilling supervision).
In this particular case, construction of the water supply system also enabled the social and professional integration of six young people from the “Sauvegarde 95” association in Cergy (Val d’Oise), who spent two weeks working at the site. Pairing up with local Senegalese, they helped with the construction of sanitation facilities and workshops to raise awareness of hygiene among the villagers.
To carry out field projects, the “Hydraulique Sans Frontières” association pairs up volunteer senior and junior engineers. Philippe Galiègue, former agency manager at Gauthey (Infrastructures division), is supporting the project. As a volunteer, he lends his development project management and monitoring skills. He acted as project manager for the Diam Diam clean water supply project.
The project also benefited from the support of Mohamadou Macquillou Camara, a surveyor at Eiffage Sénégal. He lives in Kaffrine and monitored the project locally, carrying out surveying works and acting as a link with the local population and the village.
